Thriving organisations are built on teams that not only perform but genuinely support the well-being of their members. Well-being in the workplace is not just about individual health; it is about creating an environment where people can bring their whole selves to work without fear, where they can connect, share, and grow. This is where Team Psychological Safety (TPS) becomes a critical factor.

How Can You Make Your Team Better?

Imagine being asked this question: "What can you do as an individual to make your team better?" It is a simple yet powerful question that cuts to the core of team well-being. Whether it’s speaking up when something feels off, supporting a struggling colleague, or simply listening without judgment, each action contributes to a team culture where people feel safe and valued.

But why do so many teams struggle with this? The answer often lies in a lack of honest conversations, a barrier that can turn small misunderstandings into major conflicts. This is where TPS becomes essential, transforming teams from collections of individuals into connected, resilient units.

Why Conversations Matter

Consider this scenario: John is a dedicated team member who has recently become less engaged. He’s often quiet in meetings, and his work quality has dipped. His teammates assume he’s simply distracted or uninterested.

But in reality, John is dealing with overwhelming personal challenges. If someone in the team took the time to ask, they might discover this and offer support. Without that conversation, assumptions become barriers, and John’s well-being continues to decline.

This thought experiment illustrates a critical truth: assumptions without dialogue can be harmful. Conversations are the bridge between assumption and understanding. TPS ensures these conversations can happen without fear, allowing team members to connect and support each other.

Action Learning and Cognitive Coaching

Creating a safe environment for well-being means more than just offering wellness programs- it requires building a culture where continuous learning and reflection are valued. Action Learning, as practiced in WIAL (World Institute for Action Learning), emphasises reflective questioning, allowing teams to solve problems while building strong interpersonal connections.

By also focusing on learning, this approach helps team members better understand their own thought processes. It allows them to tackle complex challenges while staying mindful of team dynamics and the emotional well-being of others. As a result, it naturally nurtures a culture where people support one another’s growth and well-being.

Speaking Up for Well-Being

Even in the most connected teams, there are moments when conversations stall. Fear of judgment, hierarchical barriers, or generational gaps can silence voices. But if team psychological safety is to be maintained, team members must feel empowered to speak up.

A practical way to encourage this is by offering scripts or prompts; simple phrases that make speaking up easier, especially when addressing sensitive topics. For example, "I noticed that…" or "Can you help me understand…" These small tools can bridge the gap between silence and support.

Well-Being in Practice: Practical Strategies for Workplace Well-Being

At the TEAM PSYCHOLOGICAL SAFETY CONFERENCE ASIA 2025, the session on Practical Strategies for Well-Being in the Workplace will be led by Dr. Risky Haslan and Dr. Neal Jha.

This session will explore how the way we engage with each other in a team significantly impacts team members' well-being. It will offer practical frameworks to support meaningful conversations and help cultivate a team culture that values both performance and personal growth.

TPS as an enabler of Well-Being at work

Well-being and team performance are not separate goals; they are deeply connected. By cultivating Team Psychological Safety, organisations can ensure that their teams are not just productive, but also resilient, compassionate, and capable of supporting each other.

In an environment where people can speak openly, listen actively, and learn together, well-being becomes a natural part of the workplace culture. This is the power of TPS in building teams where people truly thrive.
